“And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.”

Ann started dancing with her favorite partner, her camera, on a recent trip to Europe. By all evidence, it was a joyous dance that took Ann to the edges of the shores as well as to the edges of her creative process. She found ways to commemorate not only what she saw, but also what she felt. The resulting images tease our sense of reality, daring us to let go of our mundane expectations – to listen for the music and to embrace new ways to process and experience light, form and color.

I purposely use the word “images” to relieve you of the preconceptions that you might have about photographs, namely that they are clear representations of people, objects and vistas as seen through the unique eye of the photographer. Ann’s current images are certainly unique, but are achieved not only by her photographer’s eye, but from what I’ve witnessed, via her whole being! It must be the artist’s psyche that gives her a fearless sense of adventure to try new avenues of expression.

Ann has learned to harness the effects of Intentional Camera Movement and experimental exposures. She’s transformed her camera into a paintbrush that permits her to create the essence that she feels emanating from her subjects. The results fascinate me. Some images resemble impressionist paintings of identifiable objects, and others simply reflect beautiful light, color and movement that stirs me! It’s like a whole new art form that encompasses photography, painting, dance and music! So, now, when I accompany Ann on a photo walk, I’m not just afraid she’ll slip down the gully because she’s got her face in her lens, but also because she’s moving the camera – and her body – like Isadora Duncan, for God’s sake! It’s only when I see the gorgeous results that I forgive her.

Mundo Images, Ann’s greeting card company has always brought the beauty of places in this world to our mailboxes with messages that would have us dance with joy, and it will continue to do so.

I’m inviting you to a new dance through these portfolios of Ann Peterson Images.
